Interview mit Adam Thompson und Sean Smith in Hamburg

(We Were Promised Jetpacks)

Nach ihrem Debütalbum "These Four Walls" kehren We Were Promised Jetpacks mit einem neuen Album zurück. "In The Pit Of The Stomach" heißt das gute Stück, und beinhaltet 10 Rocksongs, die sich wirklich hören lassen können. Derzeit sind sie mit The Twilight Sad und Mazes fleißig auf Tour, Sänger Adam und Bassist Sean fanden aber dennoch die Zeit, uns Rede und Antwort zu stehen und ein wenig über ihre musikalischen Vorlieben als auch das Tourleben zu erzählen. MHQ-Redakteurin Jessica Franke unterhielt sich in Hamburg mit den beiden.

Vielen Dank, dass ihr euch die Zeit genommen habt. Wie war euer Tag bisher?

Adam: Okay eigentlich.

Sean: Es war schrecklich heute. Unser Wagen ist kaputt gegangen und der Diesel ist ausgelaufen.

Adam: Oh ja, das Benzin ist ausgelaufen während wir gefahren sind, das roch ziemlich übel. Wir haben Amsterdam um 7 Uhr heute Morgen verlassen, sind aber ausgegangen letzte Nacht und erst so gegen 5 Uhr wieder gekommen. Das heißt, wir haben zwei Stunden geschlafen. Wir haben dann noch ein wenig im Auto geschlafen, zumindest bis es dann kaputt gegangen ist.

Oh nein, wann seid ihr dann angekommen in Hamburg?

Adam: Ungefähr um 15 Uhr.

Sean: Wir haben zwei Autos für unsere drei Bands, und wir mussten dann die komplette Ausrüstung in ein Auto packen, wir und die Jungs von The Twilight Sad mussten dann auch umsteigen, wir wissen immer noch nicht, wo die jetzt sind...

Wow, das klingt nach einem kleinen Abenteuer...

Alle lachen.

Habt ihr denn jemals die Zeit gehabt, euch die Stadt anzugucken? Es ist jetzt euer drittes Mal in Hamburg, oder?

Beide gucken sich fragend an.

Beide: Ja, es müsste jetzt das dritte Mal sein. Wir hatten aber bisher nie die Zeit, uns die Stadt anzugucken.

Wie schade, ihr solltet euch wirklich den Hafen angucken, es ist sehr schön dort...

Adam: Wir sind eigentlich nur diese Straße hier auf und ab gelaufen (er meint die Reeperbahn, d.Red.).

Sean: Oh nein, wir waren am Hafen den einen Tag, es war toll, toller Ort.

Generell, mögt ihr es auf Tour zu sein?

Adam (nickt mir mit einem breiten Grinsen im Gesicht zu): Oh ja, sehr. Wir waren seit letztem Jahr Oktober nicht mehr auf Tour, was jetzt fast ein Jahr her ist. Und es ist toll, wieder mit The Twilight Sad auf Tour zu sein. Wir waren vor zwei Jahren schon mal mit ihnen unterwegs und hatten eine wirklich tolle Zeit. Ja, ein paar Shows haben auch jetzt schon wirklich Spaß gemacht.

Sean: Ja, es war großartig.

Was mögt ihr mehr, auf Tour zu sein oder im Studio?

Adam: Auf Tour zu sein, denn im Studio musst du dich immer sehr konzentrieren.

Sean: Es ist immer viel ernster im Studio.

Adam: Ja, es ist immer etwas ernster, du musst Sachen fertig bekommen, und gerade in den letzten Tagen kann es dann auch ein bisschen stressig werden. Aber wenn du auf Tour bist, ich meine, es bedeutet nicht, dass es egal ist, aber du musst dich weniger konzentrieren. Du holst dir einfach einen Drink und spielst die Songs, die ja sowieso schon geschrieben sind, du musst nichts mehr daran ändern. Deswegen bin ich lieber auf Tour als im Studio.

Euer neues Album wird bald veröffentlicht, freut ihr euch darauf?

Adam: Ja, sehr. Es hat lange gedauert bis zur Veröffentlichung, also ja, wir freuen uns wirklich sehr darauf.

Was könnt ihr uns darüber erzählen, was erwartet uns mit diesem Album?

Adam: Es ist ein ziemlich lautes Album, vom Anfang bis zum Ende. Es beinhaltet nicht viele ruhige Songs. Auf unserem ersten Album hatten wir einige ruhigere Songs mit drauf, aber auf diesem sind wirklich nur zehn Rock Songs. Und das wollten wir auch so. Nachdem wir eineinhalb Jahre das erste Album auf Tour präsentiert haben, sind wir etwas gelangweilt von einigen Songs. Wir genießen es wirklich sehr, unsere Sachen live und energetisch zu spielen, das sind bisher unsere besten Auftritte gewesen. Also würde ich schon behaupten, dass dieses Album ein wenig davon beeinflusst wurde. Wir haben es in Island innerhalb von drei Wochen aufgenommen, und es wurde dann in Amerika von Peter Katis gemixt. Wir haben das über Emails gemacht, ja, und das war es dann.

Wie würdet ihr das Album mit nur einem Satz beschreiben?

Adam (klopft Sean mit einem breiten Grinsen im Gesicht auf die Schulter): Das klingt nach einer Frage für dich... (alle lachen)

Sean: "In The Pit Of The Stomach" ist ein lautes, schnelles, dynamisches Rock Meisterwerk (alle lachen). Du kannst Meisterwerk gegen Album austauschen, wenn du willst.

Nein, ich denke, ich belasse es bei Meisterwerk...

Habt ihr ein Lieblingslied auf dem Album?

Adam: Mein Lieblingssong ist "Picture Of Health", es ist der sechste Song auf dem Album. Es beinhaltet die Textzeile "in the pit of the stomach". Ich mochte es, seitdem wir es geschrieben haben, also ja, das ist mein Lieblingstrack.

Sean: Ich denke, meins ist "Boy In The Backseat", welches, glaub ich, Track 8 ist. Wir haben diesen Song schon vor einer ganzen Weile geschrieben, und ein paar Mal gespielt auf der letzten Tour. Ja, das ist also mein Lieblingssong.

Wer ist bei der Entstehung der Songs involviert?

Adam: Alle! Das ist auch die beste Art und Weise für uns. In der Regel haben wir das Grundgerüst eines Songs, zum Beispiel ein paar Gitarrenriffs. Dann arbeiten wir es einfach gemeinsam aus. Es ist immer besser, es auf diese Weise zu machen. Es dauert ein paar Stunden, um einen Teil fertig zu stellen, normalerweise ist da ein Teil, der fehlt oder der noch nicht gut klingt. Dann arbeiten wir an diesem Teil, und dann irgendwann haben wir’s dann. Es ist eine gute Art und Weise an die Sache ran zu gehen, denn es bedeutet, dass jeder etwas in den Song investiert, es ist auf jeden Fall besser als wenn ich sage: "Das ist der Song, ihr müsst das so und so spielen". Für manche Bands funktioniert das auf diese Weise, aber unsere Band ist sehr gemeinschaftlich.

Was für Musik hört ihr privat? Was hört ihr zum Beispiel gerade im Tourbus?

Adam: Wir sind gerade etwas genervt darüber. Wir sind mit zwei Bussen unterwegs, es ist eine Fat Cat Label Tour, und wir sind mit ein paar Jungs von Mazes in einem Bus, und The Twilight Sad sind mit den anderen Jungs von Mazes in dem anderen Bus. Beide Busse sind normalerweise mit einer XBox und einem DVD Player und einem iPod Dock ausgestattet, nur unserer funktioniert nicht. Wir haben also nichts und hören nichts momentan.

Sean (wirft Adam einen Blick zu): Du und ich hören sowieso nicht so viel laute Musik. Ja, ich höre eigentlich überhaupt gar keine Heavy Rock Musik. Vor kurzem haben unser Drummer Darren und ich aufgelegt, und das war eher Hip Hop, Soul und Disco Musik.

Adam: Sachen wie zum Beispiel Aretha Franklin.

Ich habe gelesen, dass ihr zum Teil von den frühen Songs von Biffy Clyro beeinflusst werdet, stimmt das?

Adam: Ja, das stimmt. In Schottland sind sie eine bedeutende Band für Teenager gewesen. Das ist wahrscheinlich die einzige Band, die wir alle wirklich sehr mögen. Wir haben alle einen so unterschiedlichen Musikgeschmack, aber diese Band mögen wir wirklich alle, und sie waren für viele Leute eine sehr bedeutende Band, als wir mit unserer Band begonnen haben.

Wenn ihr es aussuchen könntet, welche Band würdet ihr gerne mal auf Tour begleiten?

Adam: Uff, gute Frage... Girl Aloud? Oh Christ... Rage Against The Machine? Das wär spaßig (alle lachen).

Sean: Dr. Dre und Snoop Dogg, wenn sie wieder eine Tour zusammen machen würden. Ja, die würde ich gern begleiten.

Adam: Ja, du hast Recht, die beiden.

Und wenn ihr euch eine Band aussuchen könntet, die euch begleitet...?

Adam: Hmmm... Rage Against The Machine (alle lachen)!

Sean: Eine gut befreundete Band von uns, deren Name ist Lady North. Wir hoffen, dass wir sie eines Tages mit auf Tour nehmen können. Es fängt gerade an gut zu laufen für sie in Schottland.

Adam: Sie machen instrumentelle Musik. Ja, sie sind wirklich gute Freunde von uns und sie machen sich wirklich gut, es wäre toll, wenn sie außerhalb von Schottland mit uns auf Tour kommen könnten.

Gibt es eine enge Verbindung zwischen den Bands innerhalb Schottlands?

Adam: Ja, ich denke schon. Schottland ist nicht wirklich groß, und die meiste Musik spielt sich eigentlich in den Gegenden um Glasgow und Edinburgh ab, was ungefähr 45 Minuten voneinander entfernt ist. Es gibt einige Bands von anderen Orten, aber alle scheinen sich eher in Richtung Glasgow und Edinburgh zu orientieren. Als wir damit begonnen haben, in Glasgow zu spielen, haben wir zunächst nicht wahrgenommen, wie viele Bands sich untereinander kennen. Wir waren also Außenseiter für eine Weile. Wir haben dann begonnen mit Frightened Rabbit zusammen zu spielen, und haben so schließlich mehr andere Bands kennen gelernt. Jeder spielt in der Band des Anderen mal mit. Es gibt also tatsächlich viele Verbindungen zwischen den Bands, das ist wirklich cool.

Was sind eure nächsten Ziele? Was können wir von We Were Promised Jetpacks erwarten?

Sean: Eine Menge Auftritte. Eine Menge Festivals nächstes Jahr, hoffentlich kommen wir auch zurück nach Deutschland dafür. Dann ein neues Album...

Adam: Und dann beginnt alles von vorne (grinst).

Thank you very much for your time. How was your day so far?

Adam: Okay, actually.

Sean: Today was terrible. Our van broke down. Yeah, the Diesel started dripping out the bottom.

Adam: We were driving along and the fuel was dripping out the van, and it smelt really bad. We left Amsterdam around 7 this morning. And we went out last night, and we were back around 5. So, we had just 2 hours sleep, and had a couple hours of sleep in the van a bit until it broke down.

Oh no, when did you arrive in Hamburg then?

Adam: Around 3.

Sean: We have got two vans for all three bands, and then we had to put all of the gear into one van and us and all the Twilight Sad guys into another, we still don’t know where they are now...

Wow, sounds like a little adventure

Have you ever had the time for sight seeing in Hamburg? It’s already your third time here, isn’t it?

Both of them are thinking about the times they have been in Hamburg. Yes, it has been the third time by now.

Both: We have never had the time for it.

Ohh, that’s a shame. You should definitely go to the harbour, it’s amazing.

Adam: We actually walked down this street here a couple of times (he means the Reeperbahn, the editor).

Sean: Oh no, we did go to the harbour the other day, it was amazing, amazing place.

In general, do enjoy being on tour?

Adam (gives me an agreeing nod and a big smile): YES! We haven’t been on tour since last October, so it has been almost a year. So, we’re really excited about that. And it’s nice to tour with Twilight Sad again. We have toured with them two years ago, and we had a really good time. Yeah, a couple of shows have been much fun so far.

Sean: Yeah, it has been great.

What do you like more, being on tour or being in the studio?

Adam: Being on tour because being in the studio you have to concentrate.

Sean: It’s all very serious.

Adam: Yeah, it is very serious, and you have to get things done, especially in the last days it can also be stress, but being on tour, it’s not that it doesn’t matter, but you have to concentrate less. You get to have a drink, and play all the songs that are already written, you don’t have to change anything. Yeah, that’s why I like touring a bit more.

Your new album will be released soon. Are you excited about that?

Sean: Yeah, very much. It has been quite a long time until it’s coming, so yeah, we are really excited about that.

What can you tell us about the new album? What can we expect?

Adam: It is quite a loud album from start to finish. There’re not many quiet songs on it. Like on our first album we had a couple of quieter ones, but on this one are just 10 rock songs. Which is what we wanted to do, because after playing the first for one year and a half we got bored of some of it. We are really enjoying playing our stuff live and fast and energetic, those have been the best shows that we have. So, I would say that influenced that album a little. We recorded it in Iceland over 3 weeks, and it was mixed by a guy, who called Peter Katis, in America. So we sorted it over emails, and then that was it.

How would you describe the album by using only one sentence?

Adam: (pats Sean on the back, smiling) That sounds like a question for you.

Sean: "In The Pit Of The Stomach" is a loud, fun, fast, energetic, rock MASTERPIECE.

Everybody is laughing.

Sean: You can change masterpiece into album if you want to.

No, I keep that expression.

Do you have a favourite track on that album?

Adam: Mine is "Picture Of Health", it’s the sixth song on the album. It has the line ‘in the pit of the stomach’ in it. And I have always liked that since we wrote that one, it has been my favourite.

Sean: I think mine is "Boy In The Backseat", which is track eight, maybe? We have had that one for quite a while, we played that the last couple of times we were here. So yeah, I like that one.

Who is involved in the song writing process?

Adam: Everybody. Which is the best way that we do it. We usually have the shell of a song, maybe a few guitar chords. Then we just work it out together. It is always better that way. It takes us a few hours to get a part right, there is usually one bit that is missing, or that didn’t sound good. So we keep working, and then eventually get it. It’s quite a good way of doing it, as it means everyone has invested in the song - rather than me just saying, "here is the song, this is how you play it." Which works for some people I think. Our band is very collaborative.

What kind of music do you listen in private to? What are you listening to in the tour bus right now?

Adam: We are a bit pissed off about this. There are two vans on this tour, it is a Fat Cat Label tour, and we have one van, and we have a couple of guys from Mazas in our van. And there’s the other van, which the Twilight Sad have got, and they have got another couple of guys from Mazas. But our van has got an xbox and a DVD player that doesn’t work, where their van has an xbox and a DVD player that does work, even with an iPod dock. So, we have got nothing. So have not been listening to anything.

Sean: You and I don’t listen to so much loud music anyway. Yeah, I don’t listen to much heavy rock music at all. Recently, Me and Darren, our drummer, have been djing every week and we played stuff like hip-hop, soul and disco music...

Adam: Aretha Franklin, and stuff like that.

I have read that you’re influenced by the early songs of Biffy Clyro, what can you tell us about that?

Adam: Yeah yeah. In Scotland they were a big band for a lot of teenagers.

Sean: I think when we first started as a band they were probably the only band that all four of us really liked. We all have different music tastes, but they were a band we all liked. So we probably did that style at the start.

Adam: They were a big band for lots of people in our age when we were starting out. Yeah, it’s a great band.

If you could decide what band would you like to support on tour?

Adam: Hum, good question Girls Aloud? Oh Christ Rage Against the Machine? That would be fun (everybody is laughing).

Sean: Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, if they did another tour together. Yeah, I would support that.

Adam: Yeah you are right, those two (everybody is laughing).

And if you could choose a band that supports you on tour?

Adam: Hum Rage Against the Machine (everybody is laughing)!

Sean: Some of our good friends are in a band called Lady North. We were hoping to take them out with us. They are starting to do really well Scotland.

Adam: They are an instrumental band. Yeah, they are really good friends, and they are doing well, so it would be nice to take them out of Scotland on tour with us.

Is there a strong connection between bands within Scotland?

Adam: Yeah I think so, Scotland is not a big place. Most of the music is centred around Glasgow and Edinburgh, which are only 45 minutes apart. There are plenty of bands from other places, but they all seem to head towards Edinburgh and Glasgow. When we started playing in Glasgow, we didn’t realise how many bands knew each other, as we were outsiders for a while. Then we started playing with Frightened Rabbit, then, we met lots of other bands as well. Yeah, there are lots of connections. Lots of people are playing for other people’s bands and stuff like that. It’s nice.

What are your next aims? What can we expect from We Were Promised Jetpacks?

Sean: Um, a lot of touring. A lot of festivals next year, hopefully we will be back in Germany for that. Then, probably a bit more touring, then maybe the new album. It keeps on going like that.
