Schon länger war in den Köpfen der beiden Musiker Gebhard und Stratton geplant gemeinsam auf Tour zu gehen und Songs beider Musiklager darzubieten. Felix Gebhard beschränkt sich dabei nicht nur auf Songs seiner Band Home Of The Lame, sondern präsentiert dem Akustik Fan auch neue und alte Solostücke. Ryan Stratton, vielen bekannt geworden durch sein Mitwirken bei Walking Concert, nimmt schon seit einigen Jahren einzelne Stücke auf und nutzt nun die Chance sich hier in Deutschland eine größere Fangemeinde unter den Nagel zu reißen, mit Hilfe Gebhards.
Die Bühne ist neben zwei Akustikgitarren mit Glockenspiel, Rhythmus-Ei, einer Bongotrommel, Melodika und Mundharmonika gut ausgestattet. Die beiden Protagonisten des Abends schnallen sich die Gitarren um und legen im kleinen und gut gefüllten Stereo Wonderland in Köln gleich los. “Engine“, ein sonst im Home Of The Lame-Gewand etwas schnellerer Song, macht den Anfang. Trotz der Akustikvariante merkt man jetzt schon, dass es kein leiser Abend wird. Ryan Stratton unterstützt Felix Gebahrd und anders herum. Die beiden wirken sehr vertraut und ergänzen sich harmonisch. Strattons erste Nummer heißt “Carrying The Water“. Der bisher unveröffentlichte Song schafft es auf Anhieb zu gefallen. Er trifft genau das Herz eines jeden Musikfans. Ohne Worte! Nach dieser Nummer ist vielen klar, dass dieser Abend einfach nur top werden kann.
Gebhard hat sich genau den Richtigen ausgesucht um seine aktuelle Akustik EP “Exit Felix Gebhard” auf Tour zu promoten. Neben der Felix Gebahrd Solo-Scheibe gibt es noch eine 7inch Split Vinyl inklusive Downloadcode zu ergattern. Bei einer Auflage von 200 Stück hat die kleine Schallplatte schon fast Sammlercharakter. Die Felix Gebhard EP steht dem mit einer Auflage von 300 in Nichts nach. Alle vier Songs der Split 7inch finden im Laufe des Abends Platz im Set. Im Wechsel gibt es mal einen Home Of The Lame/Felix Gebhard Song oder ein Stück des New Yorkers Ryan Stratton. Bis auf “Make Me Stay“ bestechen Gebhards Solonummern durch eine atmosphärische Intensität. “Not Satisfied“ oder “Used To Play“ lassen Bilder der eigenen Vergangenheit im Kopf reflektieren. “Make Me Stay“, welches mit “See You Around“ bereits 2004 vor den Toren Malmös aufgenommen wurde und auf der jetzigen Split 7inch zu hören ist, kommt druckvoller und lauter daher. Mundharmonikapart und Glockenspieleinlage zeigen überraschenderweise deutlich den Rockfaktor des Songs. Die Home Of The Lame Tracks “Rooftops“ oder auch “After Travelling“ variieren im Unterschied zur Bandperfomance. Teilweise wurde an der Melodie herumgeschraubt oder der Song so zurecht geschnitten, dass er mit zwei Gitarren einfach passend rüberkommt.
Ryan Startton verpackt seine Songs mit gekonnten Ansagen. “Lost In Berlin“ beschreibt die Situation in der Stratton von seinen Bandmitgliedern in Berlin stehen gelassen wurde oder “Juliane“, eine Story über ein Mädchen, welches Stratton nur zwei Minuten lang kennenlernte und welches wahrscheinlich überhaupt nicht weiß, dass es einen Song über sie gibt. “Supermarket Style“ ist ein richtiger Ohrwurm und möchte man ebenso direkt auf seinen iPod laden wie all die anderen Perlen. Felix Gebhard unterstützt Ryan Stratton auf den Bongos, mit Mundharmonika, Glockenspiel und beim Schmankerl “Good Doctors“ auf der Melodika. Trotz der Unbekanntheit der Songs, hat man ein sehr zugängliches und harmoniebehaftetes Gefühl. “Holograms And Cigarettes“, neben “Good Doctors“ der Beitrag Strattons zur Split 7inch, lässt genauso mitwippen wie das unkomplizierte verspielte “Young Hollywood“. So einfach kann man ein gutes Konzert hinbekommen. Charme, Witz und die passenden Akkorde. “Abandonment Blues“ bildet sicherlich das Highlight des Abends. Einfach gestrikte Songs wirken dann doch immer am besten. Bluesiger Rhythmus, eingängiger Refrain. Das Publikum wird mit Klatschen und Mitsingen in den Song eingebunden. Trotz der mittlerweile entstandenen Hitze im kleinen Stereo Wonderland scheuen sich die Leute nicht an der Aktion teilzunehmen. Das ganze wird dann auch noch filmisch festgehalten und dürfte wohl demnächst bei den allseits bekannten Videoportalen zu sehen sein.
Als ich vor ein paar Jahren schon bei einem Solokonzert von Felix Gebhard war, habe ich mich gefreut über die Solodarbietung einiger Songs von Home Of The Lame. Dass jetzt auch neue und ganz alte Songs dazugekommen sind, macht die ganze Sache nur attraktiver. Darüberhinaus hat Gebhards Kollege Stratton das Niveau des Abends noch mal angehoben. Auf seine Arbeit darf man gespannt sein und die Hoffnung stirbt bekanntlich ja zuletzt, denn bisher hat Ryan Stratton nur die aktuelle Split 7inch anzubieten sowie zwei Songs die man bei einigen Downloadportalen findet. Warten wir ab, wann da ein Longplayer auf den Markt kommt. Der Abend in Köln endet mit einem tollen Gefühl und dem Song “Without You“ von der "Habitat" EP von Home Of The Lame aus dem Jahre 2006. Ich kann mir kaum vorstellen, dass die anderen Abende auf dieser Tour nicht ähnlich ablaufen. Ausschau halten! Anhören!

For a while Felix Gebhard and Ryan Stratton have been planning a tour together. Now they are playing on one stage. Felix Gebhard plays his solo works in combination with songs from his main group Home Of The Lame, new and old ones. Ryan Stratton, known as a part of Walking Concert, has been recording music over the years and takes his chance to perform these tracks here in Germany live with the help of Gebhard.
The stage is well-equipped. Besides the two acoustic guitars you can find a Glockenspiel, a rhythm-egg, a bongo, a melodica and blues harps. Both protagonists of the evening take their guitars and start playing. The club in a party area located in the south of Cologne is well-filled. "Engine", otherwise a faster Home Of The Lame track, is the first song. In spite of the acoustic version, everybody knows at this early moment, that this show will not be a quiet one. Stratton supports Gebhard and Gebhard supports Stratton. Both artists are very familiar with each other. Strattons' first song is called "Carrying the water". A song which hits you directly to the heart. Without words! Although this song is new to the listeners, everyone is enjoying this moment. It seems that Felix Gebhard made the right decision to work with Ryan Stratton live on stage. Gebhard promotes his new solo EP "Exit Felix Gebhard" and both promote their split 7" (including download code). It's kind of a collector's piece with a circulation of only 200 items. All four songs from the split 7'' find their place on the set.
On a rotating basis you can hear one Home Of The Lame/Felix Gebhard song and one track from the New York based Ryan Stratton. The songs from Felix Gebhard are quite intensive and sometimes melancholic. "Make me stay", which was recorded together with "See you around" in 2004 at the gates of Malmö, is one of the few exceptions, it is a little bit louder and with slightly more energy. The blues harp and the glockenspiel surprise with their rock factor. "Not satisfied" or "Used to play" are reflecting images from the past in your mind. The Home Of The Lame tracks "Rooftops" and "After travelling" vary from their band versions. The melody is changing and the songs are trimming to be as good as they can be for two acoustic guitars.
With jokes and smart announcements Ryan Stratton knows how to catch the audience. "Lost in Berlin " is telling the story about how Stratton got forgotten in Berlin. Strattons bandmates thought he was sleeping in the tourbus, but he wasn't, and they drove off. So he was lost. "Juliane" is the story about a girl which Stratton knows for about 2 minutes. The girl does not even know that a musical masterpiece exists of her. "Supermarket style" is another catchy number and you wish you could take all the songs to your iPod or on whatever you listen to every day. On "Good doctors" Felix Gebhard supports Ryan Stratton on the melodica. Although this song is unknown to the audience, everyone is clapping and dancing. "Holograms and cigarettes" which you can find on the split vinyl besides "Good doctors", is such an uncomplicated and fresh song as "Young Hollywood". It seems so easy to play a good show. To be charming, joking, to create a harmonic atmosphere and the matching acoustic chords seem to be the basics to make a good show.
"Abandonment blues" is the highlight of the show. Simple chords operating best; a blues rhythm and a catchy refrain. The audience clap with their hands again and supports Stratton and Gebhard with good singing. A fan is selected to film this one. So watch out for all the well-known video websites.
A few years ago I saw Felix Gebhard on his solo Tour with Mats Bengtsson. It was very interesting to hear some Home Of The Lame songs in a different way. Now the whole thing is a little more attractive. With the new songs and some very old ones Gebhard gives us a full repertoire from his own work. The combination with Ryan Stratton works fantastic. I'm curious about the record Ryan will maybe publish in the near future. Besides the Spilt 7" you can download two more songs via iTunes or other download services.
The evening in Cologne ends up with the song "Without you". A Home Of The Lame track from the 2006 EP Habitat. The night was amazing. All the other locations will be as well, I'm sure. Thank you guys!
